Compass Chartering Corporation began operations in October 1992, when Stephen Dilorenzo set out with his own venture after the retirement of his partner from their previous dry cargo brokerage firm, V.J.C. Chartering . While that firm dealt with all aspects of dry cargo ocean transportation, the emphasis was on bulk cargo shipments of grain, barites and iron ore, in sizes ranging from handy-sizes of 20-25,000 metric tons up to Panamax sizes of 55-60,000 metric tons and larger.

Compass Chartering has, since it's inception, continued to concentrate on bulk/break bulk cargo shipments, in both the sizes as detailed above as well as in smaller-sized parcels, ranging in quantities from about 1,000 to 8-10,000 metric tons. In addition to these cargoes, Compass has expanded into and arranged for the ocean transportation of steel products (for U.S.Steel and Midland Metals) in various quantities, refrigerated cargoes (for Tropicana Products), as well as shipments of aluminum products, ferroalloys, lead and zinc ingots and concentrates, among other dry cargo commodities, such as wood free rolls, art paper, and copy paper. These products were principally from Indonesia for distribution in North America along with the management of 40 public warehouses. The inventory is managed from our web-based software designed specifically for efficiency and productivity of our clients.

While brokers many times wear two "hats", the brokers at Compass Chartering concentrate their energies on behalf of their cargo clients, or charterers, and are known to act therefore as charterers' brokers. In this capacity, Compass provides their clients with regular ocean freight market information, which can indicate trends upward and downward so their clients can take appropriate actions to protect their interests. Further, and while obtaining the lowest ocean freight for a specific cargo shipment is always paramount to the brokers at Compass, they are also well aware that there are additional ways to save freight costs. These savings are achieved through the negotiation and acquisition of beneficial terms for a shipment, and also through a careful review of a ship owners' laytime calculations after a shipment is completed (many times ship owners' calculations are in their favor, oddly enough). These are among the many aspects of cargo chartering of which the brokers at Compass Chartering are keenly aware, and from which their clients are able to benefit.

Through the years of experience that we have - the brokers at Compass Chartering have a combined total of some 75 years in the brokerage business - we are capable of providing competent and knowledgeable guidance to our clients, and we look forward to the opportunity of being able to demonstrate our services.
